Lake Stewardship

Property Owner Education

Our lakes are special, and an integral part of the lifestyle, heritage, and economy of the area. It’s no small effort to protect our lakes – it takes all of our combined efforts. OTLPOA provides communication and resources to improve our knowledge in areas such as aquatic invasive species, water levels, boating safety, shoreline erosion and more.

Forest Tent Caterpillar Control

Worm Spraying

Around the beginning of June each year, lake residents start to notice a creepy-crawly phenomenon: worms. Or, more accurately, forest tent caterpillars. They seem to be everywhere! No birds or animals eat the worms, so once they start multiplying there’s no natural process that controls the worm population. Left unattended, these small creatures will happily defoliate every tree and bush in your yard by the end of summer. If this happens too many years in a row, eventually your vegetation will die.
Fortunately, there is a solution! You’re probably aware that area lakes have been sprayed for these pests in the past. Those who choose to participate in the program pay a small fee to OTLPOA, and their property will be sprayed to prevent this otherwise inevitable nuisance.

Clarity readings

Water Testing

OTLPOA members volunteer their time to assist OTC COLA in its Water Quality Monitoring program. Through this collaboration, your lake association helps share vital lake monitoring measurements that are are recognized as significant indicators of lake health.

Our volunteers collect water clarity samples on a consistent, scientfic basis. OTC COLA coordinates the water sampling, transports samples and reports results between the lake associations and the analytic laboratories as needed.

Samples are analyzed by RMB Environmental Laboratories, Inc. in Detroit Lakes.

Boating safety

Buoy Placement

OTLPOA manages buoys to alert boaters of rocks that may be present in the water. The buoys are located in areas that have the largest threat to cause damage to a watercraft. Volunteers maintain, place, and remove these each year.

Funding for special projects

OTLPOA Foundation

The OTLPOA Foundation is a supporting organization to OTLPOA, created to secure funds for projects that protect and preserve our lakes and river. Some examples:

  • Offering free swimming lessons for children and adults
  • Partnering with DNR watercraft inspectors, and hiring our own inspectors to augment staff
  • Installing i-LIDS (cameras) at Otter Tail Lake accesses in a pilot program with Otter Tail County Land and Resources
  • Purchasing replacement solar lights for Otter Tail Lake’s nine hazard buoys in 2023.
